Mountain settlers had to be very self sufficient and make what they needed to live, including making their own soap.
Animal fat, water and  lye were poured into a large cast iron pot suspended over a fire. as the mixture heated, it  was stirred constantly. The heating and stirring combined the ingredients to become soap.
